The ornate Calumet Building is back on the market. Owners Mark Goldman and Arthur ZIller have listed the Chippewa Street landmark with Hastings Cohn Real Estate with a $1.1 million asking price. Goldman is credited for the revitalization of Chippewa Street when he opened the Calumet Arts Café in 1990. The 26,400 sq.ft, three-story building was designed by architects Esenwein & Johnson.
Business First has the sale details:
Goldman and Ziller bought the Calumet two decades ago and lovingly restored the circa 1906 building, with Goldman eventually opening a restaurant — named appropriately enough “The Calumet” in its first floor.
The restaurant, now known as Bacchus Wine Bar & Restaurant, has been run by local businessman Steve Calvineseo. Bacchus remains open and will be unaffected by any sale.
“Mark and Art just though the timing was right to put the Calumet on the market,” Hastings said.
2005 plans for an expanded Calumet by Tommaso Briatico Architects.
Previous efforts to sell the property were unsuccessful. In 2002, it carried a $1.2 million asking price when listed with Berlow Real Estate. Later, there was a tentative deal to sell the property in early-2006 to Kissling Interests. Kissling went as far as drawing up plans to add two floors of residential space to the building but let its option expire.
