Marvin Hamlisch Returns to the BPO to Salute Jerome Kern

Marvin Hamlisch, one-time Pops Conductor of the Buffalo
Philharmonic Orchestra returns to salute Jerome Kern 
on
Saturday, February 28th at 8PM at Kleinhans Music Hall.  Hamlisch will present a program with
selections from Jerome Kern’s acclaimed Broadway musical, Showboa
t, as well as several
hit songs from the acclaimed American master, as part of the BlueCross
BlueShield Pops Series.

Hamlisch spent six seasons in Buffalo, starting in 2001. He is
the composer of more than forty motion picture scores including his
Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were
and his adaptation of
Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting
, for which he received a third
Oscar.  His prolific output of scores for films include original
compositions and/or musical adaptations for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People,
The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas
and Save the Tiger.

His latest effort is The Informant, starring Matt Damon,
directed by Steven Soderbergh, and scheduled for release in September, 2009.

Marvin Hamlisch holds the position of principal pops conductor
for the National Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra,
Seattle Symphony and San Diego Symphony.

The world-renowned Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in
1935. Since 1940, the Orchestra’s permanent home has been Kleinhans Music Hall,
a National Historic Site with an international reputation as one of the finest
concert halls in the United States. The Orchestra presents more than one
hundred Classics, Pops and Youth Concerts each year in Western New York. During
the tenure of current music director JoAnn Falletta, the Buffalo Philharmonic
has rekindled its distinguished history of NPR broadcasts and recordings,
including the release of eleven new CDs of a highly diverse repertoire on the
NAXOS and Beau Fleuve labels.
