On January 10, three-time Artvoice Best of Buffalo award-winners the Skiffle Minstrels performed to a packed house–well, a packed warehouse–at Flying Bison Brewery. Buffalo poet Lisa Forrest called the event “uniquely Buffalo,” saying, “Where else can you stand around in your winter coat with good friends, listen to honky-tonk, and drink beer straight from the tap?”
Local music supporter Susan Jaworski, echoed Forrest’s sentiment, “This event was great. It not only showcased local talent, it showcased a local product. The Skiffles kept the music flowing as freely as the beer–and how can you argue with an event that pairs an accordion player and a brewery?”
Skiffle Minstrels member Maggie Zindle regarded it as a learning experience as well. Among the lessons she cited: “I am capable of drinking a half gallon of beer (really GOOD beer); boys that work at breweries are happier than the average bear; and fiddles go out of tune–a lot–when they get cold!”
The event was such a success that the band will return to Flying Bison (491 Ontario Street) on January 24 from 1-4pm. And don’t let the cold scare you away–this time, they’re playing for the brewery’s chili cook-off. For $5 you can keep yourself warm sampling the handwork of Buffalo’s best cooks. Or, call the brewery at 873-1557, to enter your own special chili recipe. All proceeds from the event benefit Cornerstone Manor Shelter, so you’ll have a warm feeling in your heart, as well.
