The Pearl Street Brew Pub continues to impress me every time I visit – and no, this time it’s not the beer tubes, the Indie Market, or Lake Effect Man. It’s smaller. Much smaller. A feature that might be overlooked by non-smokers. I’m talking about the black lion ashtrays positioned by the front door. Finally, a business has countered the scourge of rampant butt throwers with an attractive butt disposal system. A ‘lo-tech’ ashtray. Thankfully the solution for this business was not one of those big, gray plastic jobbies that end up catching fire all the time (though they are better than nothing at all).
The team at the brew pub has taken something soooo problematic and has come up with a system that actually works. I guess it’s back to the basics – duh. Just the other day I walked into a Laundromat on Elmwood (at North) and asked the attendant if he was planning on putting an ashtray out front for the customers. Or at least consider sweeping the thousands of butts that lay flicked out onto the sidewalk. He didn’t appear to be very responsive. These solutions are so simple that they actually go over the heads of the worst perpetrators. The sidewalks are butt-free at Pearl Street because the owner cares about litter prevention and the aesthetic presentation of his business. I wish more business owners would take a chapter out of the Pearl Street Brew Pub book.
