In a matter of minutes it will be Friday… the day that will most likely bring on the signing of a check for just under four million dollars. With the signing, Buffalo will lose out on an an opportunity to retain an incredible museum that has been waiting in the wings for many, many year. When the transaction takes place, it will not only be a loss for Buffalo and Western New York, it will also be a huge loss for New York State and the entire US of A. Why? Because the collection is irreplaceable. It is the world’s largest collection of American-made bicycle and I believe that we will look back upon this day and regret the lack of action taken to keep the collection in The States where it belongs.
This week we brought Phil Haberstro in from the Wellness Institute to talk about the what the loss will mean to us. Many people had hoped that the museum (currently located in Orchard Park) would eventually find its way down to the Inner Harbor where it would fit as a piece of the growing museum puzzle. It was thought that the museum would add to the transportation legacy that was being built upon… instead the museum will most likely be bought by an overseas investor and sold piecemeal in order to recoup the purchase price.
