UB Green is pleased to announce the formation of a new book club for environmentally conscious students, staff, and buffalonians.
“UB Green Book Club will solely focus on books that have environmental topics, covering a range of different issues. The club will meet once a month at the UB Green Library, which is located on UB South Campus in the Service Building at 220 Winspear Avenue,”
The first two meetings on September 9 at 12 PM and September 18 at 7 PM will be used to discuss the structure of the book club for people interested in joining. “The reason we decided to have two introductory meetings at two different times is because we know students are busy and don’t want them to miss the introductory meeting because they have class,” Tim Reagen, Student Assistant at the UB Green Office explained.
“At the first two meetings the structure of the book club will be discussed, which is an open form. Most of the books we are reading have book reading guides for book clubs, which we will use at our meetings. The meetings will be free and open discussions, but we will try to keep the meetings short by not getting off topic. All of the meetings that will be held for the book club will only be one hour long because we know people are busy during the school year,” Reagen stated.
Through out the year the book club will read six different books on various environmental topics including: Planetwalker and The World Without Us. “I suggested the book Planetwalker because I love this book. The book captures the inspiring story of author John Francis who was living in the San Francisco Bay area when there was an oil spill. After seeing the devastating effects of the oil spill he gave up motorized vehicles and a few months later he took a vow of silence that lasted 17 years. Ultimately, Francis ends up taking a trek across the U.S. on foot and along the way and without a word he earns an undergraduate and Masters degrees in science and environmental studies and a PhD in land resources,” Reagen explained.
“The other book The World Without Us is another book I liked, that I read last summer. The book is about how the world would change without the human population and how the world would recover from the impact humans have had on it,” Reagan said.
In addition to reading great books the UB Green Book Club also wants to raise awareness for the UB Green Environmental Library. They want to expose people to the great collections of books at the library. The UB Green Book Club is not just for UB students. “We are encouraging UB students, faculty, and people from the Buffalo community to join the book club. After all, the UB Green Environment Library was built for the Buffalo community,” Reagan stated.
