In August of 2004, at just 22 years old, Adam Zyglis became the staff cartoonist for the Buffalo News, replacing Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Toles, who left for the Washington Post. Since that time, his work has appeared in papers around the country, including USA Today, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. In 2007, Zyglis won 3rd place in the National Headliner Awards and became internationally syndicated.
Election years are generally goldmines for editorial cartoonists – and 2008 is no exception, with Barack Obama’s big ears, John McCain’s wrinkled face, and plenty of spicy campaign politics. On Saturday, September 13 at 1:30 p.m., Zyglis will explain the cartoonist’s creative process and how to interpret an editorial cartoon in a talk titled “The Art of Editorial Cartooning” at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society Museum, located at 25 Nottingham Court at Elmwood Avenue.
The talk complements the Historical Society’s new exhibit Shaking Hands and Kissing Babies, which looks at the evolution of presidential campaigns and Buffalo’s connections to the White House.
Admission for “The Art of Editorial Cartooning” is $8 for the general public and $6 for Historical Society members and students. For more information, call 873-9644 or visit www.bechs.org.
