Joining a health club isn’t worth the investment if you’re not going to use it. I’m sure you’ve known people who have signed up for health club memberships, fully intending to launch fitness programs, only to stop showing up at the facility after just a few weeks. Most fitness professionals will advise you that, if you want to maintain a consistent fitness program at a health club, be sure to select a facility that is convenient for you to use on a regular basis.
One of the assets of Terrie’s Workout Center is that it is a facility that makes it easy (relatively easy, that is) to work out. The gym is located in the heart of North Buffalo, on Hertel Avenue at Sterling. It has a central location on a major street, long hours or operation, and its own attended parking lot. While Terrie’s is less expensive than most gyms, it provides what the larger gyms offer in terms of equipment and programming.
“It’s like they say in the real estate business—location, location, location,” said Pat Proctor of North Buffalo, a long-time member. “Terrie’s has a great location that makes it very easy for a lot of people to get in and out.” While parking can be difficult at times in the Hertel Business Strip, Terrie’s has its own lot for patrons directly at the rear of the building.
Terrie’s Workout Center is an independently owned fitness club that has been located in North Buffalo since 1989. Terrie is Terrie Pozantidis, a fitness professional who once taught aerobics at Sophisticated Lady, Ultimate Fitness and the BAC. Eventually she decided to open her own small aerobics studio, catering exclusively to women. As the business grew, Terrie expanded into another building, turning her aerobics studio into a fitness center complete with weights and cardiovascular equipment, and began attracting a male clientele as well.
Part of the facility at 1473 Hertel was once a bank—you can even see the old vault. While it’s an older building that wasn’t originally designed as a health club, it works well. The place is bright, clean and probably has all the equipment you’re looking for. There are various free weights and weight machines on the first floor, as well as an open room for classes. There’s also a spinning room and a tanning room with a bed and a booth. The second floor has a variety of cardiovascular equipment, such as treadmills, stairmasters, exercise bicycles, and elliptical trainers. There’s also a pilates studio, massage room, and boxing ring for personal training sessions.
Terries’ has a laid-back, neighborhood-type atmosphere, and the staff doesn’t have a high-pressure sales approach. Both staff and most members are friendly, making a trip to Terrie’s a social event as well as a workout for many members. Proctor said that the family ownership of Terrie’s makes a difference. “They actually care, unlike the big gyms,” he said. “They even send you a birthday card. I’ve never belonged to a gym that did that!” Chris Baines of Kenmore, who has been a member of Terrie’s for nine years, agreed. “It’s not a heavy metal gym. It’s a comfortable, friendly place to work out, whether you’re a man or a woman.” He added that the high level of maintenance and cleanliness of the facility is also important to him.
True to her roots, Terrie still offers a variety of classes throughout the day, from various kinds of aerobics, toning, spinning, and yoga. All of the classes are included with membership.
A big trend these days in fitness is personal training, and members have access to one-on-one training sessions for an additional fee. You can hire one of Terrie’s personal trainers to take you through a specialized workout designed to address your personal fitness goals. There’s a variety of options for personal training, including boxing.
Massage therapy, babysitting, and a well-stocked juice bar are among the other extra amenities that are available as well.
Another big convenience for Terrie’s members is its schedule. The facility is open 7 days a week, and on weekdays the doors open at 5:30 AM (yes, there are people who work out that early). Monday through Thursday the doors don’t close until 11:00 PM. “Most health clubs close at 10 PM,” said Baines. The fact that Terrie’s is open that extra hour makes a big difference for me.”
All these factors combine to make Terrie a gym that’s makes it easy for you to work out on a consistent basis. Especially if you’re a North Buffalo resident, if you belong to Terrie’s there’s no excuse (at least no good excuse) for you to miss working out.
