Forest Lawn Cemetery is collaborating with the Roycroft Campus Corporation in organizing a motor coach tour on Thursday, September 19th from 1PM to 5PM titled Larkin, Roycroft and Forest Lawn Legends -From Beginning to End.
This event will include a “Little Journey” throughout Buffalo to visit the many sites that are asociated with the Larkin Soap Company and then grew, through the efforts of Larkin Executive, Elbert Hubbard, to the birth of the American Arts & Crafts Movement.
Learn about The Larkin Soap Company which was founded in Buffalo in 1875. Among the principals were John D. Larkin, Elbert Hubbard and Darwin Martin. By the early years of the twentieth century, the company expanded beyond soap manufacturing into groceries, dry goods, china, and furniture. Larkin was a pioneering, national mail-order house with branch stores in Buffalo, New York, and Chicago.
The tour begins at the Roycroft Campus where guests board an air conditioned motor coach and travel to Buffalo. Guests who live in Buffalo can also join the tour at the Larkin @ Exchange Building, Exchange and Van Rensselear Streets where parking is complimentary. Sites includes a walk through the Larkin @ Exchange Building, a look at Larkland – Estate of the Larkin Family, history of other Larkin executives and concludes with tour of Forest Lawn cemetery with a tour explaining the history of the cemetery and viewing sites of notable, Larkin , Roycroft and Martin families.
Forest Lawn Interpretive Program Director and Roycroft enthusiast, Sandy Starks will lead the group on the tour. Assisiting Starks will be Linda Ulrich-Hagner, Roycroft docent extraordinaire. The day ends with a reception at the Forest Lawn Chapel where guests can enjoy the natural landscape and beauty of WNY’s largest arboretum.
