The annual Buffalo State College Art Conservation Clinic will occur Friday, September 19.
People with questions about damaged heirlooms, collectibles, or antiques can make an appointment with faculty experts at Buffalo State College. If you don’t have any questions about your treasured items, experts will be on hand to examine items and offer advice about conservation options and care for your treasure. “The purpose of the clinic is to identify good conservation treatment and research projects for our students, while helping community members by conserving their “treasures.” We are not able to accept every item that is brought to the clinic. The clinic itself is free of charge, but there is a fee for service,” Elizabeth S. Peña, Director of Art Conservation Department and Professor at Buffalo State College stated.
“The Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State College is one of only three comprehensive graduate programs in the United States, training students to be conservators of works of artistic, historical, and cultural significance. Our graduates are employed at museums, libraries, historical societies, and similar institutions all across the country,” Peña explained.
The best part about this clinic is that it’s free. However, appointments are necessary and will be scheduled in the order that calls are received. Based on past clinics the Art Conservation Department is expecting all appointment slots to be filled. “In the past Buffalonians have brought an amazingly wide variety of items to us — from a Picasso print to a 19th-century stitched sampler to a stoneware crock,” Peña revealed.
“In addition to objects brought to us at clinics, we also work with community partners including the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, the Buffalo Museum of Science, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery,” Peña stated.
You can schedule your 30 minute appointment with a faculty member in one the art conservation department’s three areas of study including: paintings, paper, or objects by calling Diana McNerney at 878.5025.
