During tonight’s Democratic National Convention, a Buffalo State College alum will be in the spotlight. Gregory Smith, 44, of Brooklyn, N.Y., interned with Barack Obama’s campaign earlier this year and now works as a Colorado field organizer. Sometime tonight between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m., the campaign will pay tribute to Smith and the strength of his support.
Smith, who completed a bachelor’s degree in political science last May, has been an Obama supporter since 2004. After writing a letter to Obama more than 18 months ago, campaign staffers responded to him and kept in touch. Smith donated $25, even though finances were tight. He explains in the following YouTube video why he gave.
Later, on a few occasions when Obama visited the New York City area, he called upon Smith to introduce him at local churches and fundraising events.
Now working at the Democratic National Convention, Smith called Buffalo State last night to let the college know about tonight’s story.
Smith, who is married and has two children, said he’s humbled by the upcoming spotlight. Viewers can see what’s in store later tonight.
