Local K through 12 educational organizations will now have the opportunity to receive a part-time ABLE (AmeriCorps Builds Lives Through Education) tutor to supplement staff.
As a non-profit organization, Western New York AmeriCorps is able to offer ABLE tutors for significantly less cost to partner organizations than tutors from private companies or freelance tutors.
The ABLE tutoring program is designed to improve the literacy rates for children living in Buffalo’s neediest neighborhoods by offering one-on-one tutoring with AmeriCorps members. Qualifying tutors are typically college students or retired professionals, and come highly trained and educated. Additionally, ABLE tutors must have at least two years of college experience and be able to make a commitment of up to one year.
Currently, the ABLE tutor program has 39 partner organizations utilizing their services across Western New York, including: Houghton College youth program and Elmwood Village Charter School. Public, charter, parochial and private schools, as well as community-and-faith-based organizations throughout Western New York will have an opportunity to obtain part-time AmeriCorps tutors through partnering with them. To become a partner with AmeriCorps, educational organizations can fill out a request for partnership form by clicking here.
All part-time partnership requests are due by July 25, 2008.
