After hosting a four hour bike tour of the Inner Harbor, Cobblestone District, Old First Ward, and Erie Basin Marina this past Saturday, a couple of us peddled our way home. Along the way (you can never go directly home) we came across a beautiful corner garden that appeared to spring up out of nowhere. The garden (top photo) is located where Rabin Terrace and West Huron come together, a mere block from City Hall. I’m always looking out for interesting pocket parks, and although this little lush oasis is private, it still offers passersby the opportunity to experience the time and effort that someone has lavished upon this corner.
Just around the corner from the Rabin/Huron corner park we discovered another whimsical park near the corner of Prospect Avenue and Carolina Street. This park was formerly an abandoned playground and dumping ground. One of the immediate neighbors wrestled half of the public lot away from The City and incorporated it into a larger private parcel. Now the large plot of land is utilized by the neighborhood for children’s parties, planting flowers/veggies and fruit trees, and meet-ups. The diverse neighborhood has come to embrace what was formerly a major eyesore. And the neighborhood kids have learned the importance of having a safe and fun place to have picnics and water-balloon fights.
