Earlier today we were talking about why the Red Cross ‘MASH’ Bash is so successful every year–not just because it sells out. It’s not about the attendance, although 5000 people is an impressive count. Of course, one of the reasons that people love the event so much is partially due to the atmosphere. Just seeing that grand tent at the corner of Delaware and Summer gets people talking. The backdrop of Millionaires Row is kinda neat too. Watching people walk to MASH Bash is even fun. There are so many spectacular events in Buffalo – so what sets this one apart from the rest (despite the obvious)?
Is it the fact that the event starts when it’s time to shop for a costume? Some people are lucky enough to find a costume in a couple of drawers. A white tank top and a pair of green pants is all it really takes to pull off the military look. But there are others who feel that they need to go all out for the role. Maybe just having the choice is what makes the party work so well. And even ‘going all out’ for a party such as this does not break the bank. Browsing through an Army/Navy store is fun as well as cheap.
We were trying to think of other themed events that could work as well as MASH Bash. It was tough to come up with another theme that was not flawed. MASH Bash makes it easy… especially for anyone who is in the medical industry. Just toss on some scrubs or a nurse outfit and you’re good to go. Even the inexpensive dog tags are a big hit with the attendees. If someone skips out on the military look, at least they can throw the freebie around the neck to fit in. The tent idea works too. It’s easier to clean up than an indoor area–if a beer spills, the lawn can handle it.
Even though Lance Diamond is not exactly the military type. he has become a staple at the event. I can’t imagine MASH Bash without him. All-in-all, the event has become such an indispensable Buffalo event… just as The World’s Largest Disco has, but a bit more intimate. Whoever came up with the idea sure hit the nail on the head. Where else could a normal Joe show up with a stethoscope and scrubs and leave the hit of the party?
