Members of the Grant-Amherst Business Association were out on Amherst Street bright and early this morning getting the street ready for their upcoming June festival. Actually, June 14th marks a day when a series of events will take place in this district. Of course there is the Rediscover Amherst Street event that includes a pie baking contest and a fun parade. Then there is the Strawberry Festival held that same day at Saint John’s Church (closer to Niagara Street)… way to go Reverend Fred! Finally there will be a groundbreaking at the Rock Harbor Village site, complete with an artistic iron pour to wrap up the day’s events. The iron pour will pay tribute to The Seabreeze… the first metal steamboat ever operated on the Great Lakes. The Seabreeze was launched at the terminus of the creek in 1907.
Free trolley rides will be offered to people all day long, so that all of the events can be connected. Riverkeeper will also be on hand to offer kayak tours on Scajaquada Creek. All in all, Amherst Street is certainly becoming an inspirational district of Buffalo. There are sections of the street (in Black Rock) that have remained virtually unchanged for a hundred years. With the continued help of organizations such as the Grant-Amherst Business Association and Grant Amherst Block Watchers, the Rediscover event will continue to bring new visitors into the area to learn about the history of the neighborhood.
Special thanks to Wegmans for giving a discount on the flowers and providing coffee and donuts to members of the street cleaning party. The fifteen-member group arrived at 5am and departed at 11am. And look for the new street banners to arrive any day now.
