I’m not real up on blogging – but I have a story that I think is worth talking about.
I’ve noticed that the city is horrible at composting. Even when people do take the time to put leaves or grass clippings in clear bags, the city will pick them up with the trash and land fill them. My understanding (and I have talked to the people at the mayor’s hotline several times), is that the only official composting effort that is made is in the fall. My observation is that the trucks go around once and that there is no coordinated effort. In fact, the way that I understand it we are told NOT to put leaves in the street, however that fall pick-up appears to be the only one being composted – NOT the bagged ones. They get land-filled.
I called the mayors hotline again yesterday and was finally told that if I wanted to bag my leaves and set them by the curb, I should call the hotline and specifically request that they be composted. They also said they would send out a fleet of trucks to pick up my leaves.
With my taxes, I got a flyer labeled: “Do your Part, Buffalo…Recycle”. Not a single word about composting.
Another (often overlooked) part of this effort is the commercial guys. Where are they throwing their grass clippings? Does the city provide access to the compost pile? Or are they forced to pay tipping fees to a landfill? I believe it is the latter.
Am I the only person who thinks the city’s recycling effort is really a farce?
