Has anyone else seen this unusual (and most likely illegal) form of advertising that appeared on Delaware Avenue? It’s on the crosswalk of Allen, and you can’t miss it if you’re walking from one side to the other. I did a double take on my bike yesterday and had to hop off and take a photo. The guerilla advertising looks to be made up of some sort of vinyl flooring that has been cut out to form letters and shapes. The words read, “House of Hades – Kill Media Or They Kill You”. Even though this was apparently done on the sly, I can’t help but think that this is kind of a neat (and original) way to get a message across. It certainly caught my attention. I would imagine that The City would frown upon this though… if someone who stops to read it gets clipped by a car there could be trouble. Whoever installed this message must have spent a good amount of time making sure that it was permanent. The edges are tarred down to seal the material to the street.
I came across a Philadelphia blog that states how awesome it is that House of Hades tiles had been spotted in Buffalo (with photo). That led to a Flickr website that featured another image of a Hades tile – that one read, “I Am One Man w/ Fatal Disease”. As I dug even deeper I found that this is sort of a tile graffiti… this blogger is going on some roadtrips to search out new and old tiles. And if you really want to get into it, check out this site that leads us to the people who are really into the tile scene (and other forms of guerilla graffiti). At least this form of ‘tagging’ demands skill, unlike the standard spray can tags that require zero brain cells.
*House of Hades – Name used by the Ancient Greeks for the Hellenic Underworld
