3rd In Erie Basin Beach Series: Tower Beach Jetties

It wouldn’t be cheap, but if The City is serious about having a major beach attraction along the Erie Basin Marina, then eventually a bigger plan will have to be put into action. For the time being, removing the driftwood, reconfiguring some rocks and dumping quality sand will work… especially if the beach is to be open by Memorial Day. There is already plenty of sand to get it operational. One idea to get more sand up onto the rocks was to pump it inland from further out… but that would take some studies by the Army Corps of Engineers, etc.
According to Ward Pinkel, a series of jetties would ultimately be the way to go to ensure that there was plenty of protection from the water. The buffers would retain sand, just as they do in Chicago (superimposed onto the basin wall). Of course this would be a huge expense, but it could be something to shoot for down the road. As the Erie Basin Marina attracts more and more people, eventually an amenity like this will be needed. It really is the perfect scenario… boaters on one side and beachcombers on the other.
