1st In The Erie Basin Beach Series: Beach Ring

This afternoon a few of us took a trip down to the Erie Basin Marina to scope out the property. Along for the ride were Tim Tielman and ‘beach experts’ Ward and Maureen Pinkel from Urban Threads on Elmwood. Of course we were very keen on discussing the future of the beach that will run along lake, but we were also interested in the rest of the property. We felt that it was important to point out improvements that could be easily made without breaking the bank. From what I understand, The City is gearing up on Monday to come up with a solution for removing the driftwood and building beach access. So we figured that there were other important parcels that should be reworked as well.
One of the ideas is to close off the far circle to traffic. Instead of having pavement, the circle could be a sand ring. In the middle of the ring there would still be a green grass park, and surrounding the ring (where the concrete is) there could be tables and chairs set out. I was thinking that off to the right it would be easy to set up musicians… and off to the left that big chunk of rock and gravel could be smoothed out for picnic tables and grills (or something). The ideas are endless when it comes to this property. Dedicated to walkers and bikers… and maybe someday boaters. Unless you have a boat slip down there, you might be out of luck since there is no place to tie up due to the high walls. Any and all ideas are welcome for the land that stretches from LaSalle Park to the Outlook Tower.
