On Friday, April 4 the boys choir, Libera, will be performing their first show of the spring 2008 season at Asbury Hall at 7PM. This concert marks the beginning of the boys’ US tour, and is an excellent opportunity to see this internationally acclaimed and self-proclaimed alternative boy band. To most, the idea of attending a choral concert on a Friday night would seem like something that required a specific and perhaps a somewhat archaic palate of taste, but chances are you have heard Libera already, and you didn’t even know it.
Ranging from age seven to age sixteen, the boys that make up Libera’s chorus have performed on the radio and television in several nations including the UK and Japan in addition to recording scores for films like The Merchant of Venice. These British boys have captured the attention of musicians of all kinds from modern artists such as Bjork to classical legend Pavarotti. You might have even seen them featured in a program called Angel Voices on public television. Despite the fact that public television and Bjork do little to link Libera to main-stream accessibility, the choir’s records have topped the charts with nothing but what can only be described as sheer talent. Their all white robe wardrobe does little to back the breadth of their vocal capabilities.
Libera’s choir has been described as “transcendent” and “celestial.” It’s no secret. These guys are good. But, the real fuss is about the choices they make in their program. They keep their selection of songs interesting enough to capture the attention of a wide audience. Libera performs everything from Ave Maria to music by Brian Wilson and they deserve more credit than you would suspect. If you’re the kind of person that truly enjoys all kinds of music, this concert is perfect for you. For more information, check out Libera’s website at www.libera.org.uk.
