After a successful run last year, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Buffalo/WNY Education Team was pleased to announce that they received a grant from the New York State Council of Arts. Their program for 2008/2009 is called Architecture+Education (A+E) and will be a partnership with Buffalo Public Schools.
The program will allow about 500 students from ages 4-18 who are in Buffalo Public Schools to create a project during the fall that will be exhibited at the CEPA Gallery in January of 2009. 20 architects will partner with 20 classroom teachers to create a curriculum that explores architecture.
The program was used in Hutchinson Central Technical High, Discovery, Waterfront Elementary and the Buffalo Academy for Visual & Performing Arts last year with the completed works being presented in June 2007 at the CEPA Gallery. It was piloted in 2007 with the support of Buffalo Schools Superintendent, Dr. James Williams, and was meant to utilize the ongoing Buffalo Joint Schools Construction project. That construction project has 33 schools being refurbished in about 6 years and the A+E program is meant as an outreach tool to promote learning, especially at schools undergoing renovations.
The Buffalo/WNY AIA Education Team is composed entirely of volunteers and the A+E program is a combination of architects, educators, artists, and other building trade professionals. The program will help teachers and students understand the reasons for changes to their school and how design can enhance their daily environment.
