Thanks to the Miller family of Grand Island, Urban Roots gardening cooperative will have a functioning, curved, eave-style greenhouse in the future. Actually, the plan has already been put into motion – a crew of volunteers headed out to GI in November to disassemble the glass addition. The greenhouse also comes with custom-designed tables and various operating supplies. These types of amenities can be very expensive for fledgling cooperatives to afford. At the same time, they can be very instrumental in giving the seedlings enough protection that they need to reach maturity. Miller’s Greenhouse will provide the gardening co-op with the ability to handle year ’round growing needs. I called Harvey Garrett, Executive Director of the West Side Community Collaborative to find out what the timetable was for getting the greenhouse operational:
“The Millers contacted us… we went and took a look at it and it turned out to be a great greenhouse. Michael Gainer and his Buffalo Re-Use group helped us to transport the structure. We’re hoping to reassemble it this summer. We finally purchased the two lots next to the gardening center… now we’re going to put in a watering system for all four lots. It’s an irrigation system. Then we’re fencing in the lots and adding a deck to the building. Dolci Bakery is adding a second location next door, so people will be able to sit in an outdoor seating area while enjoying coffee and baked goods. We’re always looking for volunteers to see that these projects happen sooner rather than later. The more people, the faster we can get these things done. All of the apartments and storefronts at Urban Roots are rented out… things are really moving… everything was rented immediately.”
