The corner of Elmwood and Hertel is pretty sad. Every time I pass by I cringe. The only thing that makes this corner worse is the wait that must be endured every time you catch a red light. During that wait, travelers are subjected to a sight that looks as if a nuclear bomb detonated on the corner. It’s really too bad, because when you think about the intersecting streets… Hertel and Elmwood… they are two of the more dynamic streets in all of Buffalo.
On another corner of this same intersection sits the forlorn-looking Dickie’s Donuts. I guess that’s one that didn’t make it through the coffee and donut wars. Or maybe people stopped going because of the tragic-looking porn store on the northeast corner. Whatever the case may be, the stars have been totally unaligned when it comes to any development at this intersection. If it weren’t for the strip plaza on the remaining corner (with Kinko’s), the area would be a complete disaster. And if a strip mall is your only saving grace, then that is a very scary scenario. During the summer months this is also the place where the wholesale sneaker sellers unload their merchandise.
It’s too bad that the landowners cannot find a more productive use for this busy intersection. You would think that a developer would have a field day with this all of the land. And there are no structures to worry about, or businesses to displace… this intersection looks like it has a lot of potential.
