This afternoon we decided to grab a couple beers at the Swannie House. We expected a very relaxed time along the Buffalo River, but that was not at all the case. Two beers into our visit Buffalo’s Hash Hound Harriers poured into the pub, coming off a four-mile Cobblestone run. If you’re not familiar with the ‘sport’ of hashing, you may want to refer to this BRO post when I first learned of The Harriers. Being a big fan of ultimate frisbee and rugby, I’ve always been fascinated by this rowdy mix of drinking, running, singing and wayfinding.
The Hash Hound Harriers really know how to get the crowd going… especially since the team is the crowd wherever they go. Each hash is planned by a local hasher – this hash was planned by SS Crasher (yellow shirt) who organized plenty of outdoor drinking destinations along the route. At the end of each hash, the rest of the hounds (led by the Hare Raiser) circle ’round and grade the hare’s trail. The results are shouted out in the form of a song, making for a big scene. Today’s result (song):
S@#$%Y Trail (A Song For The Hares) RA: What did ya think of the trail?
Hounds: S@#$%Y!
S-@-#-$-%-Y T-R-A-I-L
S@#$%y trail (It sucked)
S@#$%y trail (really f@#$ed)
The mother@#$%ers laid a s@#$%y trail (s@#$%y trail)
I would rather drink a beer than hash your s@#$%y trail,
S-@-#-$-%-Y T-R-A-I-L
Downtown (Sung to the song) Down down, down down
down down Down down,
down down down down
The Hash Hound Harriers are always looking for more hounds to partake in their hashes. You don’t have to be a drunk (but it helps), you don’t have to be a runner (but it helps)… it’s all about having fun and meeting other hashers. And if you can’t take a joke, then stay far, far away.
Here’s the H3’s website.
Congrats to the club for passing the 500 hash mark. 150 hashers gathered at Delaware Park to celebrate just two weeks ago!
