It’s the time of year when all of the supermarkets and corner stores are selling giant bags of individually wrapped candy. The wonderful holiday of Halloween is focused on children–children’s costumes, trick-or-treating, television specials. I’m not discrediting the cuteness of small children bundled up like superheroes. But what about the grown-ups?
I’d like to encourage all of you adults to indulge in a little candy yourself this Halloween. Not just dipping into your child’s candy sack once she’s gone to sleep. When I say indulge, I mean it. Don’t settle for M&M’s, teeny tiny Snickers bars or the ever present SweetTarts, consider choosing one or more of your childhood favorites.
Bella Mia is here to ease the time warp. This chocolate shop, candy store, and ice cream parlor has all the vintage candy: Charleston Chews, Boston Baked Beans, Satellite wafers, Necco wafers, Valo-Milks, Skybars, Rocky Roads, War Heads, candy cigarettes and lipsticks, Razzles, Sixlets, you name it, they’ve probably got it! The selection harkens back to days at the roller rink with Fun Dip and Pop Rocks or to the penny candy display at the neighborhood store.
Bella Mia specializes in novelty candy, which makes it a great place to shop for treats for your adult Halloween party. Scoop gummy brains out of the jar on the counter or pick up some wax lips. You can also grab insect suckers.
Yes, insect suckers are available in three different flavors: Cricket Lick-It with real crickets “frozen” in the center of the sucker, apple flavored lollipops with real worms inside, or the Scorpion Suckers which, you guessed it, have actual scorpions encased in sweet, sugary goodness.
If those don’t give you the heebie jeebies, peruse their selection of flavored insects. There’s no sugar coating here. The Larvets (larvae) come in BBQ, Mexican Spice, or Cheddar Cheese flavors. The Crick-ettes (crickets) are available in salt and vinegar, sour cream and onion, or bacon and cheese.
In addition to the retro candy and ghoulish bug delicacies, Bella Mia has an array of Canadian candy. Some of the top sellers include Aerobars, Kinder’s Bueno, Mackintosh toffee, and Cadbury’s Flake bar. Any way you need to justify it, get yourself, with or without kids, to Bella Mia and indulge in some nostalgic (or creepy) treats.
