The Urban Roots Community Garden Center held its first Fall Festival and Plant Swap on Saturday, despite a few thunder showers. Come on, you didn’t really think a bit of rain was going to stop the fun, did you? The Fall Festival provided a great opportunity for the neighborhood to see what the Center is about, and the final attendance tally for the day topped out at over 400 people! Members and passers-by traded plants – and gardening tips – at the plant swap, and there was face painting and pumpkin decorating for the kids, who also got to create their own one-of-a-kind ceramic tile which will be used in the new 18th Street Community Park, to be designed by architect Brad Wales and his students from the UB School of Architecture. Hungry visitors sampled the delicious gelato that will soon be made full-time in the space next door to Urban Roots, and judging from the expressions on people’s faces as they tasted it, it’s sure to be a hit.
The Fall Festival was a great friend-raiser for Urban Roots, and the Center’s membership is now at 309, surpassing their goal of 300 members for the first year of operation. Their next stop? 400, baby!
Urban Roots will be open thoughout the Winter months, so be sure to check out their website at www.urbanroots.org for up to date information on products and upcoming events.
