Soldier’s Place Sounds Off

There’s an effort to bring back the missing cannons at Soldier’s Place circle. This is the historic circle that connects Lincoln, Chapin and Bidwell where there has been a mixture of tree plantings and greenery since the 30’s when the artillery pieces were removed. Word has it that the cannons were constantly being hit by vehicles and were eventually sold for scrap per the instructions of the Parks Commissioner at the time. There had been three guns standing guard’, each pointing down a respective parkway.
The conceptual drawing featured here is a representation of what Soldier’s Circle would look like if the cannons were replaced. Linda Matt, owner of Positively Main Street is one of the people behind the drive to restore Soldier’s Place. She is helping to coordinate the effort that includes researching cannon replacements, identifying funding sources, and working with the Olmsted Parks Conservancy to coordinate a joint effort. A number of petitions are currently circulating at the following locations: KC’s Fitness, Quaker Bonnet Eatery, and Positively Main Street. For those interested in handing around your own petition, contact Linda at Positively Main Street.
