The new gallery space, Studiohart, located adjacent to Cafe 59, is hosting a series of photographs taken by Buffalo native Jean-Michel Reed. The images are a series of shots taken within the Queen City of various fires.
Reed states, “generally, I have thought the fire scene as this amazing urban spectacle – mesmerizing, terrifying, tragic – a truly sublime experience. But for me, the images work on many levels, from the long history of disaster imagery, to the modern spectacle, to my own personal fascination with firefighting.
I have been photographing fires in buffalo for over ten years. This is the first time I have show the images in a solo show, and I picked out ones that I felt kind of reflected the oddness of the fire scene.
Lastly, with as busy as the buffalo firefighters have been, and the recent critical injury of mark reed of engine 31, these should also just serve as a reminder for what it is that the city’s firefighters are doing when we are doing something more mundane, or sleeping, or the discussion of firefighting becomes political.”
Reed’s photographs of fires have been shown sporadically at member’s shows at CEPA and Big Orbit Gallery. In addition, many have been used in publications relating to the Buffalo Fire Department. Some images have also been published through 911 Pictures, a stock photo agency that specializes in emergency services photography.
