The studio is located within the City Grill building, a gentle walk from anywhere on Main Street Downtown. It is a spacious New York loft-style office that is now home to a unique service and an ambitious, creative team. Sean Hus Var, owner, photographer and Buffalo native, has developed a business that plans to change the face of Buffalo photography.
“The concept came about because of the understanding that people don’t have an organized way to to get work done. We open our doors so that people may become members and utilize our studio. Things like printing, expensive equipment, marketing – all of these things keep people from their main purpose, which is getting their work out there. We provide the necessary means, at discounted rates, so that photographers can service their clients better. They also have access to different vehicles, a website, blog, to spread the word. We are basically a car dealership. Put ten large car dealerships together and they will all receive more business. Roll everyone into one studio, one atmosphere, they will all be recognized and relate to each other because they are using a similar service,” said Sean Hus Var.
Hus Var believes that the studio will also extend well in New York City where the other hub will be located. Because he has had many business ventures here and in NYC, he has the ability to promote the members of the studio in both places in whatever type of photography that they practice. The studio will take on any commercial work that the photographers are commissioned to complete and have the facilities necessary to do so. Buffalo has not yet had a focus on fashion photography for example, but tends towards fine art pieces. Hus Var stated, “We feel that the studio will be a crossover of entertainment and fine arts, there is a lot of crossing of those paths.”
Prometheus employees are in the business simply for love of the work. All of the jobs that come into the studio are distributed to the members, none are taken by Hus Var. He is currently working on a cleverly devised coffee table book. Speaking of clever, the name Prometheus 233 is derived from the ancient God Prometheus who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to man. As punishment, Zeus had him tied to a rock and every night an eagle would emerge from the sky to eat his liver. Because he was a God, his liver grew back each and every day. Likewise, the studio gives it’s members the tools they need to have a lasting impact with their clients. As for 233, it is the Celsius temperature at which paper burns, but is also a uranium isotope. Hus Var adds, “There is a moon named Prometheus that passes through the rings of Saturn. As it does, it pulls the dust from the rings outward so that it actually seems as if the Prometheus is stealing the rings.”
The opening reception is scheduled for Thursday and the Prometheus 233 team has some innovative entertainment up their sleeve. Aside from art work by the studio photographers, a specially tailored photo booth will be set up for guests to have their picture taken. The photographs will then be displayed on monitors around the space and the money paid into the photo booth will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Hus Var stated that they also plan to have some sort of confessional and a set designed where guests can take shots.
Attend the reception and become acquainted with Prometheus 233. They are in search of photographers, set designers and models, but those who are curious about this new downtown fixture should attend as well.
