BR photographer Justin Lowe and I were granted the pleasure of a special invitation to Sean Hus Var’s opening reception for Prometheus 233. While the party did not actually begin until 8 PM, we arrived at 6 PM for a pre-party cocktail. From the first quick glance at my surroundings, I was sure that Buffalo was sold on Hus Var’s idea. The refurbished space next to City Grill was packed with models, set designers, photographers and even a couple that drove all the way from Rochester in order to gain a sneak peek at Hus Var’s venture.
Staff was roaming the floor, prepared to answer any and all questions regarding their endeavor. In the corner, a confessional/photo booth snapped pictures of eager guests and there was a full box of donations for the American Cancer Society. Hus Var himself weaved through the crowd, forgetting to greet no one and even joined me in the confessional for one of the first photos taken throughout the night. Aside from the food, photographs and mingling, the studio was full of paintings by Phillip Burke’s, a native to WNY and avid fine arts promoter.
In case any reader missed out on our first post, Prometheus 233 is a full service media studio. As further explained by the staff, this entails photographic or printing equipment provided to local artists by the studio, at a price much cheaper than it costs to buy their own. They also provide such tools as in-house models, hair stylists and makeup artists. The studio basically acts as a central meeting point. A company can contact Prometheus with photographic work that they want completed, and once the details are sorted, the studio staff connects that company with a local photographer who can best fulfill their needs, from commercial to fine art photography. This type of business has been established in other areas of the country but is entirely new to downtown Buffalo.
Overall, Prometheus 233 seemed to be off and running with some heavy local support. Photographs from the opening as well as from photographers living and working within Buffalo will hit the Prometheus site very shortly. For those unfamiliar with the territory, Prometheus 233 is located on Main, in the same building as City Grill, around the corner from Sound Lab and across from Crowley Webb & Associates, (a successful ad agency for over twenty years) and Pearl Street Brewery.
