I have an assignment for you. Now that the buzz from Garden Walk has subsided ever-so-slightly, go out into your yard, snip the biggest red flower you can find, and stick it in your hair. It’s time to Tango!
Tango dancing has exploded in popularity here in Buffalo over the past couple of years, thanks in large part to the Buffalo Argentine Tango Society. Of course, it’s not hard to understand Tango’s appeal… exotic, sensual, and romantic in every sense of the word. The dance is simple enough that you can learn the basics in just a few minutes, yet complex enough that you’ll spend the rest of your life mastering it. In fact, the Society’s events attract dancers of all ages and skill levels, from beginner to expert. And what events! Their social calendar puts Paris Hilton to shame. In addition to regular Practicas (practice sessions) and Milongas (dances), the Society has weekly lessons, workshops and dinner parties. Whew!
Next on the Society’s agenda is another Big Tango Weekend, September 14-16. The three day Tango extravaganza will begin with a Practica on Friday night, followed on Saturday by workshops during the day and a dinner/dance at night. Sunday will be given over to private lessons. Though the Practica and workshops are geared toward dancers, the dinner/dance is for anyone who enjoys Tango, even if only as a spectator. The Memorial Day Tango Weekend was a huge success, and the Society hopes this one will be even bigger!
