August 18th marks the fifth annual Carly’s Crossing Open Water Swim. This event takes place every year to benefit Carly’s Club for Kids and Pediatric cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Last year, 325 swimmers raised over $100,000 for the foundation. Robin Hace of Carly’s Crossing says, “We are right on track, with the number of swimmers expected, to what we had last year and hope to exceed that.”
Carly’s Club for Kids exists to offer support programs to make life more manageable for children diagnosed with cancer and their families all while raising funds, at events such as this, so that they may one day find a cure.
Buffalo Small Boat Harbor at Gallagher Beach is hosting the event, with three courses mapped out for the swimmers. One course will be 600 yards non-competitive, another course will be a 1 mile non- competitive and the last will be an option of a 1 mile timed course. Youth and adult swimmers are still needed and encouraged to sign up. Registration takes place right up until the start of the swim. “We attract a lot of kids that participate in local swim clubs and then their families come out and show support as well. We would love to see more adults register to swim,” says John C. Senall, Carly’s Crossing. Each swimmer must raise a minimum of $50 in pledges.
The event promises to be fun for the entire family with a special appearance from an Olympic swimmer from Team USA, a recognition party, food and entertainment lasting until 3:30PM.
