Many times, families struggle with something to do during the summer. Some movies may be too violent and large crowds may be intimidating. Sometimes the weather is uncooperative. For families facing this situation, the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium within the science building on the campus of Buffalo State College offers a cool solution.
The Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium presents its summer public schedule for families and groups of all ages. Escape the heat for the indoor “Stars of the Summer,” presentation where participants will learn the location of many of the summer constellations, stars, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, planets and their moons. College Alumni, who were all past operators of the planetarium, will be on staff to answer any questions regarding our night sky.
After a quick break, the staff will offer an additional program called “Midsummer’s Meteor Showers.” This program highlights meter showers and offers tips for the best way to view them. “We will climax the meteor program with the Perseid Meteor Shower in August. A meteor shower may peak at a certain time, but they are quite active ten days before and ten days after the peak. Perseid peaks in a moonless sky, during the new moon phase which gives us a great advantage because the sky is bright enough with the city lights. This will be the year’s best observed meteor shower,” said Arthur Gielow, Planetarium Director.
Following the Meteor Shower program, weather permitting, the staff will present an opportunity to view the night sky first-hand through portable telescopes during “Observation Hour”. Feel free to bring lawn chairs and personal telescopes for this program. Take note that the moon will be full on July 30. New moon will take place July 14 and August 12.
The programs will run on Friday evenings only at 7:30 pm, beginning July 13 and ending on August 18, 2007.
Tickets are $5.00 per person (all Ages). Tickets are sold at the door beginning at 7:00pm. Inquires can be made by contacting Mr. Arthur Gielow at (716) 878-4911.
