Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul, in cooperation with Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, announced this week that a “Just Drop It” box, for vehicle registration renewals, will now be placed in convenient locations. The strategy behind the box is that the public will have a 3 day return for their registration as opposed to the 30 day wait when sending their renewal to Albany. The Clerk’s office and the Mayor are encouraging employees and residents to utilize this box in order to also save the County any where from $460,000 to $1 million that they lose annually when transactions are mailed or completed on-line. The eventual hope is to save the taxpayers money and keep much needed tax dollars within the county. County Clerk Kathy Hochul says, “That’s $1 million that I’d rather see back in the pockets of taxpayers.”
The drop box will be located in high traffic areas for public convenience. These locations include County Hall, City Hall, the Rath Building and 7 Auto Bureau locations. Hochul said, “We have certainly approached private businesses regarding drop boxes. I provided information last week to the Buffalo Niagara Partnership to ask for their help in getting the word out to large businesses and we talked about on-site locations throughout the County. Downtown makes sense right now.”
If parking proves to be a difficulty Downtown, the suburban locations have more than enough room for your vehicle. “This is part of our overall strategy of bringing services closer to the public,” Hochul stated. The drop box availability is the same as the location’s hours and the staff has already begun to collect some renewals.
