Following the successful Easter 2004 publication of the Broadway Market’s first cookbook, a second volume has been recently released.
As compared with the first volume, Recipes & Memories: Broadway Market Cookbook Volume #2 takes a slightly different approach. The focus of the first publication was to collect an assortment of traditional recipes from vendors and customers. The second volume adds to that collection, but also includes a variety of resources for those interested in the history and culture of the Broadway-Fillmore district.
The community that emerged in the early-to-mid 20th century in the area surrounding the Broadway Market was unique and fascinating. Much of the culture was transplanted from Europe and adapted to a new area- and the food was no exception.
Some of the most delicious recipes from this time are now available to everyone. The cookbook includes Kapusniak (Sauerkraut Soup) from E&M Bakery, Chicken Breast Supreme from Max Poultry, and Garlic Roast Beef from Lupus Meats, among others. These dishes, from long-standing and celebrated vendors, are sure to add a nice new touch to your recipe collection.
Each of the six recipe dividers contains a historical photograph of the Broadway-Fillmore district. For those not only interested in the past but also the future vitality of the area, included is a list of notable sites to visit, complete with websites, phone numbers, and addresses.
Here’s a sample idea of a nice afternoon trip to the district: check out a mass (in English or Polish) at the recently revitalized Corpus Christi Church, on the corner of Clark and Kent streets, followed by lunch around the corner at the Broadway Market. While you’re there, pick up a copy of the cookbook and some ingredients for your first attempt at one of the many classic recipes disclosed within.
Copies are available at multiple locations within the Market, including Bi-Nutrients (the wonderful herb and vitamin shop), Simpson & Associates Financial Services, and the Market’s Main Office.
The cookbook is also available through the Broadway Market website for a very reasonable $10 (plus $3.95 S&H).
The Broadway-Fillmore district adds a unique flavor to our city. Bring some of that into your kitchen!
