Mondo Video, formerly of Elmwood Avenue has officially relocated to the University Heights area of Main Street near Englewood. Proprietor, M. Faust said that business has been less than brisk for rentals, but attributes that to the fact that rentals, in general, have slowly declined over the years.
Faust is grateful to the Internet for the business it affords him in selling the hard-to-find and specialty films he collects and rents, many of which are still on VHS format.
And therein lies the difference between Mondo Video and chain video stores; Faust has a staggering amount of films that true mediaphiles won’t find anywhere else, especially on Netflix.
Faust has foreign films, cult classics, martial arts, and more, though he says the two most sought-after genres are horror and erotica, reminding us that Dracula was a combination of the two, being early European erotica.
Though some films are arranged by genre, others are categorized by country and director. Within the category of horror, for instance, he segregates films by European zombie, Japanese ghost, and classic 1930s Hollywood monster types.
Like a good librarian, Faust knows his facts, and he said that most developing countries start with horror movies because they’re relatively inexpensive to make. His single biggest category in erotica is European, mostly comprised of Italian and French titles that were never released in America.
Faust’s decision to move to Main Street was the result of the proposed hotel assuming the space he rented on Elmwood. Though the hotel deal fell through, Faust was solicited by a University Heights neighborhood association. They called him and offered to help him find a new location, and he made the leap.
Though he had more room on Elmwood, Faust likes the new location. And for those who are tired of the same old offerings of the local video store, it’s worth a look around.
