Two-time New York State Golden Gloves champion Excell Holmes takes on Canadian super-heavyweight champion Frankie Rill in the main event in Saturday’s “Battle of the Champions” at McKinley High School at 1500 Elmwood Ave.
Holmes fights out of the Northwest Community Center Boxing Club, which is hosting the event. Some of the top amateur boxer from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Canada, Albany and Western New York square off against Canada’s best in a night of amateur boxing action.
Light-heavyweight Lionell Thompson of Buffalo was scheduled to face Jonathan Rego of Toronto, but that match fell through when the Canadian’s medical clearance did not come through in time.
Other local fighters include Johnny Davis and Joshua Sussice of Thunder Boxing in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
The first of about a dozen scheduled bouts begins at 4 p.m. Saturday. General admission tickets are available for $10 in advance at the Pearl Street Grill, or $15 at the door.
