The Albright-Knox’s outstanding “Gusto at the Gallery” series continues with the following events, Friday, 11/3/06:
6 p.m. Documentary Film: Waiting for Beckett, 1994. Directed by John Reilly (90 mins.).
Compiled with Samuel Beckett’s guidance, this film explores previously unknown details in the author’s life and work, from anecdotes by childhood friends in Ireland to details of Beckett’s life in Roussillon as a member of the French Resistance. Starring Steve Martin and Bill Irwin.
7:45 p.m. Lecture: Beckett in the French Resistance
UB Assistant Professor of English Damien Keane will discuss Beckett’s shift from a major figure in modernism to an originating figure of minimalism. His talk will examine Beckett’s WWII experience, including writing Watt, while working for the Resistance in Paris.
8:15 p.m. Panel Discussion: Beckett: Modernism to Minimalism
with John Reilly, Damien Keane, Laurence Shine, and moderator Patrick Martin.
9 p.m. Performance: Rockaby
Irish Classical Theatre Company Artist-in-Residence Josephine O’Neill presents a one-night only performance of Samuel Beckett’s Rockaby, in celebration of the play’s premiere performance in Buffalo in 1981.
7 – 10 p.m. Nickel City Poetry Slam with Susan B. Anthony Somers-Willett
Hosted by Gabrielle Bouliane and Just Buffalo Literary Center
Join poet and teacher Susan B. Anthony Somers-Willett and local performance poets for the return of the Nickel City Poetry Slam. Somers-Willett ‘s first book of poetry, Roam, was published in 2006 as part of the Crab Orchard Award Series Open Competition. She competed at the 1997 and 1998 National Poetry Slam, and has been featured at the Green Mill in Chicago, Austin’s South by Southwest Conference, and New York City’s Urbana Slam where she won the 2002 grudge match individual title. Registration will begin at 7 p.m.
The Gallery is free from 3-10pm.
