RARE SHOWING OF WORKS FROM REDISCOVERED WESTERN NEW YORK ARTIST CARL W. ILLIG: “A Painting Nature: Selected works from the Estate of Carl W. Illig (1910-1987)” will be presented October 26 through November 16, 2006 at Dana Tillou Fine Arts, 417 Franklin Street, Buffalo. The show features regional landscape paintings from this important rediscovered artist.
Carl W. Illig was born in East Aurora, New York, where he later studied under Arthur Kowalski. He was also a student and colleague of Emile Gruppe during summers spent in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Best known for Western New York outdoor scenes, Illig’s work carries on a long tradition of regional landscape painters and recalls Charles Burchfield, Carl Peters and Gruppe, among others. Illig’s distinctive, energetic brushstrokes capture the color and light of the region.
In the late 1950s, Illig was involved in the restoration of murals by Alexis Fournier at the Roycroft Campus (East Aurora, NY). He was also a member of The Buffalo Society of Artists.
There will be an opening reception on Thursday, October 26 from 5:30 PM through 9 PM, which is open to the public. Regular show hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 AM to 5 PM.
The show is presented by Dean Brownrout, Joe Gerace and 20thcenturyfinest.com, in association with Dana Tillou Fine Arts.
