Another hidden gem within the walls of the Buffalo Museum of Science, the Science Museum Camera Club has been an affiliate of the museum since 1939 . . . over 65 years! The club consists of 40 to 50 mostly amateur photographers with a few who do some professional photography on the side. The group meets twice a month at the museum, October through May. On the first Tuesday of each month the club holds print and slide competitions adjudicated by an outside judge. On the third Tuesday of each month there are educational programs intended to promote member’s growth and development as photographers. Occasionally they also have field trips to sites that offer interesting opportunities for picture taking.
The Science Museum Camera Club is a member of the Niagara Frontier Regional Camera Clubs (NFRCC). This organization is made up of camera clubs from Western New York and Southern Ontario (10 clubs in all). In the fall (November 12th this year) the NFRCC has a one-day seminar with a professional photographer. In the spring (March 24-26, 2006) the NFRCC holds a convention that includes nationally known presenters and regional photography competitions. The photo above was the Camera Club’s 2004-2005 ‘Print of the Year’ in the monochrome division. It was taken by Emanuel LoPresto and is titled ‘Storm Brewing’.
So, you want to learn more about photography but are concerned you don’t have enough experience? No worries, experienced camera club members mentor those new to photography. All that is needed to become a member is an interest in taking pictures and payment of a small annual membership fee ($25/year for individuals, $40/year per couple). So if you would like to improve you photographic skills, participate in competitions, workshops, field trips, and share your particular interests and pictures with fellow shutterbugs, contact Mary Lou Frost, Camera Club President at 694.6136.
