One of the best brunches in Buffalo

Believe it or not, the other morning was the first time that I had ever tried a brunch at Nektar. Let me start by saying that Jeanne's spicy Blood Mary is quite possibly the best one in the city. That was how we started off the Sunday morning. The drink was loaded with horseradish, and was topped off with two plump olives, a lemon and long feathery celery stick for stirring. If you're looking for a watered down Bloody Mary, then this is not the place. Jeanne's recipe packs a punch.
Besides a complimentary table piled high with cheeses, yogurt and honey with walnuts and granola, pastries (Danishes) and olives, Nektar has a dozen breakfasts from which to choose, There are also some heavenly sides of Canadian bacon, home fries and fresh squeezed OJ. The atmosphere is cool even in the morning, and there is always chill music playing - very Buddha Bar-esque. Then there is the presentation of the food, which is so wonderful that it's almost a shame that it must be eaten.
The meal that was presented before us was the red flannel corned beef hash - combination of corned beef and red beet hash, with poached eggs. I am not normally a hash guy, but I was amazed at how delicious the meal was. The dish was served with the freshest blanched green beans imaginable - with crème-fresh lemon zest glazed over them, and raspberries, melon and watermelon on the side. The eggs were poached so that they ran slowly over the hash when pierced... the orangey-yellow drizzled down over the deep red beet hash, which made for a sumptuous looking meal.
Hands down, the prize for tastiest part of the dish went to the crisped new potatoes that were slide thin and salted. Man, were they excellent. I couldn't help but to dredge the spuds around on the plate to catch the last remaining bits of hash and eggs - truly a delight.
Sunday brunch at Nektar runs $15.95 a person, which is not too bad when you consider the free fare that goes along with your meal. Your first Bloody Mary, Mimosa, or glass of wine and coffee/tea is complimentary to boot.
