"That guy? That guy is the owners dad!"
Special Beer News Report
After a thoroughly delightful and sud-soaked September, what does October have in store for Buffalo real beer drinkers? Well, this month's news, barring short-notice posts, is pretty light. In fact, only a few items of interest have crossed my desk, sad to say. It's fair- the festival season has come to a close, and true handcrafted beer aficionados have retreated to their cellars to get the brewing season off to a start. Remember, teach a friend to homebrew day is only a month off!
Click through for this month's admittedly short (but sweet) beer news!
The first is that as of tomorrow, Flying Bison's Hoops special dark returns to Ulrich's Tavern! This beer is brewed for (and uniquely available at) Ulrichs, and is named for owner Jim's dad, who bought the bar in 1954. It's a fantastic beer, which I reviewed way back when discussing Ulrichs here.
Upping the ante, tomorrow night (and every Wednesday night!), local brewer Dave Glor (lately of Mr. Goodbar Goodbeer Club fame) will be behind the bar, dispensing pints and pearls of wisdom... well, pints certainly. Beer trivia is a likely second option. So, come watch the Sabres' season opener with good food (did I mention there will be roast beef? There will be roast beef!), good drink, and gemutlichkeit!
I should add that if you did manage to miss the Oktoberfest at The Central Terminal, Ulrich's own is this Friday, Oct. 6th at 6:30- make your reservations early. The Frankfurters will be playing, and the Spaten will be flowing like water, I have no doubt.
The next bit of beer news I have to float you all is that Mr. Goodbar's Goodbeer club tasting is scheduled for, as always, the second Wed of the month, the 11th. I don't have word yet on the theme, but they've never failed to deliver yet, so come one, come all- but again, make those rezzies! Drop by at 1110 Elmwood to reserve a spot, or call 882-4000.
Finally, I was alerted to this by a reader, it's from the BuffaloPlace website:
Halloween Brews and Blues: Halloween has never been so fun for adults as Shea’s Performing Arts Center invites you to Halloween Brews and Blues! The judges will be watching on Thursday, October 26th, so come dressed in your most creative Halloween costume for a chance to win cool prizes. Your ticket into the event will include a bottomless mug for all brews, great food and live music from Buffalo’s favorite bluesman, Doug Yeomans and Lo Blue Flame. Stay tuned to the E-Report for a complete listing of participating restaurants and breweries. Tickets are now available for $25.00 in advance and $30.00 the day of the event. Shea’s Performing Arts Center is located at 646 Main Street and for more information or tickets call 716/847-1410 or visit the website.
I'm told this event really does featue quality beers: Southern Tier, Ithaca, Elicottville and maybe even Ommegang have been at past incarnations, so it sounds like a BR.O Beer Guy approved event.
Folks: have a very beery month, and look for my reviews sometime about the midway point! Cheers-
If willy wonka made beer it would taste like this, wonderful!
worth 3 golden tickets, Tim & Phil outdid themselves on this one.
Hoops there it is!!
Mr Goodbar's Goodbeer club: beers announced!
This months' tasting will feature two N. American brewers of excellent Belgian style beers: Allagash, from Maine, and Unibroue, from Quebec. Great lineup- make your reservations today for tomorrow night!
