A Square Of Pizza?

http://www.buffalorising.com/yum/archives/upload/2006/08/pizza-thumb.jpg
As long as I can remember I have been eating square 'slices' of pizza. I grew up addicted to Mr. Pizza which is now located on Elmwood Avenue (at Bird Avenue), though when I was younger it was over near Grant Street. I remember when I had some friends visit from college we ordered pizza from Mr. Pizza... I'll never forget their reaction to the square 'slices' when the box was opened. They looked at me like I was from another planet. Where they came from this was unheard of. After trying the pizza (Buffalo has great pizza) they were sold on Mr. Pizza, yet were still perplexed as to the presentation. Since then I have heard that there are a few other pizza places around town that also serve their pizzas cut into squares.

Is square 'slices' a Buffalo thing? The advantages of a square over a slice is... well... I guess there are more pieces. And they might be easier to eat. For those people that don't like crust there are always two middle pieces for them. The corner pieces have more crust for those who like it. Plus there are different sized pieces for everyone. Our family is made up of crust lovers, so the middle two squares are always left for last, but even those eventually go. Is the idea of square pizza a Buffalo-centric idea? Or do other cities also serve pizza that way? And what up with dipping pizza into blue cheese? That has got to be a Buffalo thing!

Square slices are quite common in St. Louis.

You are killing me Newell. You are now required to send me one cheese and peperoni. Is there a way to do that?

Square pizza is quite common - there is a chain in central new york that sells square pizza - very good pizza at that. The company is called Nirchi's Pizza.

Squares are common for Chicago-style thin crust pizza.

Buffalo is the only place where I've encountered round pizza cut into strips. The pie is cut in half, with several cuts made perpendicular to the first crosscut. I don't know why some area pizzerias do that, since it makes the slices heavy, floppy and difficult to handle.

Guys are you kidding me??? With all the Italians in Buffalo?? The square pizza is called a Sicilian Pie. Growing up in Brooklyn (Bensonhurst) it was very common to order a sicilian pie and of course the crust was awesome. Kinna the original deep dish pizza!

Square slices were the rule iin most homemade pizzas that i remember. Has anyone ever seen an italian making pizza at home by twirling it in the air.? Usually it is gently and minimally handled , stretched into a square pan w/ olive oil on the pan/fingers (so as not to overwork the dough). The crust was thick And the toppings always KISS like fresh sauce made from plum tomatoes and fresh basil. None of that gooey commercialized crap with wannabe parmesan. Because in the end it was always the dough and not the topping that counted.

I think some of you are talking about two different types of pizza. The original post was referring to regular round pizzas being cut into squares. A sicilian pie is a completely different animal- rectangular in shape (so of course, square/rectangular slices), thicker dough, and usually thicker on sauce & toppings. At least that's how it is where I grew up- and at the risk of starting the age-old pizza argument, I'll leave it at that! ;)

i've noticed that the square slices are a Buffalo thing. Matty's Pizzeria in Batavia cuts their round pies into square pieces as well (unless one asks for "pie cut"). Out here in Rocha, it's very uncommon.

Buffalonians have remarkable appetites, so I am surprised that anyone even bothers to cut a pizza at all. My husband and I have argued viciously about which is better, squares or slices. I like squares better, so in the spirit of marital harmony we always get squares. I grew up in Ct, and the local pizza place, Post Corner, did squares on the large pies...but the Blue Cheese thing is strictly Buffalo. I have to admit this particular culinary affinity makes me gag.

Here I sit in sunny San Diego (my very own purgatory), mouth watering over the mere thought of a square slice of "Just Pizza" pizza dipped in bleu cheese. MMMMMM. . . . . . . .

Growing up on the east side, my parents loved to go to Martucci's pizzeria, which closed many years ago. Since it was within walking distance it was one of the kinds of pizza that I grew up on with the square slices, gooey cheese and crispy pepperoni. Sometimes I got sick of it, but I could go for a slice of it now!
