Every once in a while people need a place to go that qualifies as a perfectly good neighborhood pub. The Wellington Pub just might be that place. I had never paid too much attention to this eatery, as the facade is fairly nondescript, but seeing that I was shopping on Hertel the other day I decided to try it out. The guys over at CooCooU raved about the Reuben when we told them we were heading over, so right off the bat we had a major thumbs-up. The interior of the restaurant is reminiscent of an English pub, replete with a big old British flag hanging on the back wall of the large dining room. The signature dark wood beams against the off-white ceilings and walls are a dead giveaway that you're about to be served a laid back, pub-style meal... and a mid-afternoon beer is definitely not out of the question.
The whole time that we sat at our table I could not get over the feeling that I was eating at some sort of Swiss Chalet... where were the skis on the wall, or the burning hearth? As a matter of fact it was also a bit like being at a ski lodge at Holiday Valley. This was already an unusual experience, but one that I was excited to be having. Rather than going with the Reuben I decided that the pot roast sandwich was going to be the choice meal. It went with the chalet/pub feel, and I wanted some warm comfort food since it was super windy outside. As an appetizer we ordered the Hawg Wings...
Hawg Wings? What the... I guess that Hawg wings are the hog version of chicken wings. To tell you the truth I was very skeptical to order them, but as they say, "When in Rome". I also asked for some fries on the side for an extra buck - extra crispy of course. The Hawg Wings were very good. The meat literally fell off the bone, and before I knew it I was eating them like oversized chicken wings. Plenty of meat, super flavorful - the wings were a winner. The barbecue style meal was meatier than traditional wings - almost like ribs... and we even dipped them in blue cheese. They also come Cajun style and or Jerk flavored.
The pot roast sandwich was also good. It was juicy... very juicy, and big. Mine was served on a Kaiser roll, and in hindsight I would have ordered it with horseradish to top it off. My fries were not served crispy, which was a bummer because I was really looking forward to them, but alas I was already feeling a bit full from the rest of my meal. The crowd at the Wellington Pub looked as if they had been coming to eat there for years. There was surely a comfortable feeling about the place. On top of the meal that I ordered the menu must have had at least 60 other choices to pick from. There were pub sides, pub burgers, sandwiches, salads, lighter fare, appetizers, Wellington entrees, and special entrees. There's even a kiddo's menu - a good thing to know if you're looking for a new place to take the little guys.
All in all, the Wellington Pub is a good standby when you're looking for a casual meal at a reasonable price. The pub is located at 1541 Hertel Avenue. Established 1984. 716-833-9899
