Sabres Fashion for the Ladies or How Not to Look Like a Dumb Girl

Hockey-cthumb.jpg
The Buffalo Sabres may be the most adorable group of athletes the Queen City has ever laid eyes on. Between Marty Biron's crystal blue wolf eyes, mysterious Ryan Miller's shaggy aura, and Paul Gaustad's handsome intensity, ladies now have even more to love about hockey.

But of course, we also want to win! And there's nothing wrong with looking good while doing it. Well, maybe a few things, and I've created a fashion list of dos and don’ts for those females partaking in the revelry.

Number one: do NOT wear a pink jersey. You will not be taken seriously by guys and even other girls who will claim to be bigger hockey fans than you. Hockey is not cute. Wear your team colors and support the boys for what they are. I don't know who thought about creating 'pink' jerseys for women (probably a man), but it was not a smart idea. Everyone I know holds dear to the blue and gold, not Pepto Bismol pink.

Number two: do NOT dress up for hockey games. Yes, I know there are a lot of men there, but HSBC Arena is NOT the Chip Strip. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen girls wearing high heels at the games, trying to scale down the stairs to their seats. And sorry ladies, the guys are going to be watching the game, not you.

Number three: you CAN look good wearing licensed apparel. In a casual poll taken around the office, guys LOVE girls who wear jerseys. True, right now, getting a hold of a jersey is probably tougher than finding a snowball in July, but there are other options. And if you DO get a jersey, it doesn’t have to be a kid size xxsmall. A medium (the smallest adult size available) looks fine without being trashy. Check out the Sabres Store in HSBC as well as eBay, Laux Sporting Goods, Dick's Sporting Goods and even JC Penney for some great deals on t-shirts, new and vintage. The vintage symbol of the buffalo with crossing sabres is a hot print right now, as well as the old style royal blue satin snap jacket with blue and gold elastic banded wrists. The Sabres Store also has an excellent array of fine sweatshirts, lounge pants and fleeces--zip up and pullover. Most of these items look great with a pair of jeans and sneakers or low-heeled boots for a night out. Hats are always also a cute option. New Era Cap Company in Downtown Buffalo has the greatest selection of Sabres caps, but the Sabres Store also has a great array of New Era's comfy toppers.

Number 4: it's always ok to go all out. So you are at a game or the bar--wear your spongy puck hat, paint your face, make your own t-shirt, make a sign. It really doesn’t matter, just show your Sabres spirit in some way, even just wearing a plain blue t-shirt, and you'll be on your way. Because of course, being on the winning side is always the most fashionable of all!

Personally, I think women who wear male sports clothes look stupid and the men, too. I thought Halloween was once a year on 10/31?

nicoleshoe January 12, 2007 01:57 PM

sorry jefferson, but its not halloween when you are attending a game

Rock the Sabres wear ladies!!! I saw a girl wearing high heels and all dolled up at one of the games and she looked sooooooooooooo silly (it could have also been her medically enhanced top half!) Throw on some cute jeans and your fav Briere shirt and support our boys! I was in Sweet & Dirty the other day and they have chocolate rice crispy Sabres hockey pucks!! You can't beat that! Chocolate and Sabres...now if only we could pour chocolate over my fav player :)

Nicole so good to see you on BR!! You rule, and you keep it real!!

Charlie January 12, 2007 05:33 PM

Dean C. would be proud, good job. Guys do love girls in jerseys.

seriously... January 12, 2007 06:52 PM

Are you kidding me with this post? How about wearing what you want to wear??? If you like pink...wear PINK! If you want to wear the traditional jersey...WEAR THE TRADITIONAL JERSEY! If you want to dress up...DRESS UP! I take offense to the fact that you insinuate wearing a pink jersey means you're a "dumb girl". Haven't we learned not to judge a book by it's cover? Hopefully women go to the games to enjoy them and don't feel the need to wear an "official" jersey just so that they can be taken seriously.

I couldn't agree more with seriously. I don't see this post as "keeping it real" at all. Ladies, let's give ourselves a little more credit...

Buffalo Rising...how about some more issue-oriented posts for women, not just this fluffy stuff. We have a lot of educated and interesting women doing great things in this city...let's hear about/from them. Please!

Nicole Schuman knows what she's talking about!! :)

I gotta agree with Nicole that there is a little bit of fashion etiquette for hockey games. 'Seriously', you bring up a good point, but in reality I do recall thinking to myself at games something to the effect of "are we at Chippewa?, or don't you at least have a relevant colored shirt?" Call me shallow, maybe it's stupid, just what really goes on in my head. And I think chicks look very hot in Sabres jerseys, probably more so the non-pink type.

Gretchen...im actually a professional individual doing good work at a nonprofit in the community...im also a writer who likes to have a little fun...occasionally we all need a little fluff in our lives.

Who gives a shit what you wear to the game. It's a place to "Watch" a game not the people around you (unless you have no interest in the game). As for dressing in public, unless a game is going on, ladies, please stop dressing like men in public and if someone calls you a dyke and your not , dont get offended, it's your fault for looking like one.

Gretchen January 13, 2007 04:42 PM

Nicole--I would love to see a post about your non-profit work. My comment was more in general about hearing and reading more about that kind of work that women are doing in Buffalo, not what we are wearing. I think women calling other women "dumb girls" perpetuates bad stereotypes. It's disappointing.

Jefferson January 16, 2007 04:22 PM

Right on "T"!

Irish PR girl January 17, 2007 10:21 AM

Nicole great article! Kudos for not taking yourself so seriously....unlike some people in these comments. Hey in the end... LETS GO SABRES!

meme January 19, 2007 02:31 PM

I'll only say one thing...I had a chance to see the pink jersey today on a co-worker, and it is just plain ugly! I agree with Nicole's comments about wearing the true Sabres colors - forget the frou frou stuff for the games...it's HOCKEY after all!

nicoleshoe January 22, 2007 11:01 AM

thanks friends...and i was out at the bar on saturday for the game and was happy to see plenty of people with sabres gear on...just to WATCH the game! i love this city!

SC January 28, 2007 11:48 AM

Amen!!! I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to new Sabres wear that women can get down with! The pink crap is garbage! I have an old school jersey that I rock along with a couple of old school t's. What I'd like to see are more t's and sweatshirts intended for women that are not dykey looking or intended for chubby/obese soccer moms that jumped on the bandwagon.
Other teams prop the ladies, why not the Sabes?
