Super Spooky Elmwood Halloween (and Lexi too!)

Super.jpg
Last Saturday, Elmwood Avenue experienced an influx of ghosties, fairies, superheroes and pirates. The Elmwood Village Association was hosting their annual Spooktacular Trick or Treat event. Although the weather was sketchy, the skies cleared just as the festivities began. Kids and families flooded the sidewalks as they visited the participating shops that line Elmwood from Allen to Forest.

Now in its fifth or sixth year, this event has become a Halloween staple for many Buffalo families. It is ideal for those with little ones. Bulky costumes on a dark and windy evening do not go hand in hand with the Huggies set. But here, neighbors visit with neighbors, stop for a nosh, do a little shopping, and keep the children safe and entertained while they’re at it. These are the things that keep the Elmwood Village feeling like a community as opposed to a strip of stores.

The shops really went all out. Most offered sales or specials related to the holiday. A contest was held for the best window display. Any of you that have passed by the fearsome Salon Rouge will understand why it was the clear winner.

Runners up included Elmwood Panhandler and Lab Indigo, with an Honorable Mention going to Watson’s Chocolates.

The Elmwood Village Association’s event was organized and facilitated by Lacy from Diggin’ It. M&T acted as a corporate sponsor, Paragon Advertising designed the posters and Treehouse provided the balloons that demarcate the participating shops. Cheers to a job well done!

Part 2: Later that night (by queenseyes)

Yes, Elmwood may have been the place to be during the day, but in the Lexi District all hell broke out that evening. Mike King from the Lexi General Store turned his back courtyard into a devilish good time. Kids were escorted (by Mike) through a dark alleyway where they were greeted by a ghostly graveyard, a witch and cauldron, a maniacal chef preparing a live head, leatherface, and a 'real' electrocution. Screams echoed throughout the neighborhood, while parents of the kids waited on the opposite side of the building for their young ones to return (running full speed).

Add the General Store to your Halloween list of 'creeptacular' things to do next year. The effort that Mike put into this frightful night was incredible. "We're turning this corner of Lexington and Ashland into the place where everyone wants to be," he told me. "It's a real neighborhood with a lot of new businesses moving in to keep it vibrant an exciting."

great photo! Superman was a very popular costume this year.

I'm the mother of superman and supergirl in the picture, and close friends with the other superhero. Is there any chance I could get a copy of the picture. I downloaded it directly from the website, but I'd love to have a better quality image to display proudly in my superhome.
Thanks. Laura Sommer

Laura, give Diggin' It a call. Lacy snapped the shot.

I would be happy to send you the digital photo, Laura. The three "Superheros" were all really cute running down Elmwood.
