Gewürztraminer is the focus of BRM’s May wine feature. Today, we explore the basics at Hodge Wine & Liquor with Alphonse DiMino, Buffalo Rising contributor and Wine Director at Buffalo Chophouse. Below is an excerpt from Alphonses’ article.
“April showers mean May flowers. Do snow showers count too? After a miserable start to the spring season, we can look ahead to greener pastures and exciting new wines. I love the month of May, a time of renewal, warmer weather, and the smell of fresh flowers. It would only be appropriate to discuss a wine that reminds me of this. It is probably the most mispronounced varietal as well.
Gewürztraminer (guh-VERTS-truh-MEE-ner), is an intensely aromatic wine that usually offers strong floral and lychee characteristics on the nose. When I think of this wine, I imagine a bouquet of roses. The aromatics are so pronounced even a novice wine drinker could recognize them. On the palate, it has surprising spiciness, lush fruit, and weight. When done right, this wine should have tremendous concentration and beautiful dark golden hues.”
