From time to time, I run into people who say they don’t “do” technology. Most of these people are over 55 years of age.
At this moment, 28 million Americans are digitally illiterate. Compound that with the fact that 92% of current jobs require some computer skills, and we have a serious disconnect.
I have been beating the same drum for a long time – every age group, especially seniors, needs to learn computer skills. Thankfully there are some organizations out there that are stepping up to help.
From the milestone of feeding over 1 million meals during the pandemic, the Buffalo Dream Center is now embarking on a new endeavor to help the neediest in WNY to adapt to today’s ever-advancing technology. The nonprofit’s Mission: Ignite, Tech 360 program and Buffalo Dream Center have partnered on a simple computer training program to jumpstart students’ computer knowledge. Plus, after the candidates complete a free class, they receive a desktop computer to take home!
“A few hours of someone’s time could take them from computer illiterate, to functionally computer literate,” stated Pastor Eric Johns at Buffalo Dream Center.
Since the pandemic, the need for computer literacy is undeniable. Nearly every job application requires at least some basic computer skills. Not to mention that everything we purchase – even the simplest rewards membership program – cannot be accessed without a computer. Too many people feel lost or left behind, while many people do not know where to start.
The Dream Center and Mission Ignites Tech 360 will provide (for free) much-needed basic information about computer technology, while providing attendees with a desktop computer to take home.
“A free class with a reward of a computer at the end is a remarkably easy way to provide a positive experience and bright future,” stated CEO of Mission Ignites Christine Carr-Barmasse.
Mission: Ignites Tech 360 programs provide a safe space for learners to gain skills in digital literacy, by creating customized programs to meet the needs of our community. Mission: Ignite partners with NorthStar Digital Literacy and Grow with Google to design a curriculum that guides participants toward proficient computer knowhow.
