It may not be the newest place on Hertel, but 1207 is a diner-esque style go-to that is well worth a visit. For some reason this 30-seater has eluded me for the last two years. That’s when the place opened after owner, Chef Jerome, gutted the place in order to introduce the neighborhood to his dream breakfast and lunch spot. I arrived this morning to sit down to an egg benedict weekend special and a cup of coffee. Rebecca, my server, was on top of things with her coffee top-offs, which was a nice touch on this rainy day. Linda and Chef Jerome were busy running the kitchen, and the smells coming from the stove wafted towards the front where my table was situated right next to the window.
You can’t miss this 1207, you just have to look for the knight in shining silver armor who stands guard next to the front door. The knight stands guard over the restaurant seven days a week and has come to represent the business. “Frontier on Grant has the white stallion,” Jerry told me. “We have the silver knight… during the summer he stands out on the sidewalk and people have come to recognize him in the neighborhood.” As far as my ,Aeoeggs benny,Aeo? The eggs were prepared perfectly and the side of home-fries ruled… especially when swirled around on the left over hollandaise sauce. Soooo good! The people, the food, the coffee and the knight… they’re all great reasons to stop into 1207. The restaurant is also open for lunch, and the menu for both morning and noon meals include items like hogies, paninis, burgers, beef on weck, pastrami, eggand tuna salad, fingers and wings, create your own omelettes, souvlaki, and pancakes. I’ll be back to try my hand at the lunch menu because I see that they also feature a Philly Cheese Steak… hmmmm.
