It has taken us three years to try Kostas, and now we’ve been back twice in one week!
Kostas Family Restaurant on Hertel Avenue, as the name suggests, is the perfect FAMILY restaurant. Last weekend, after a long day of yard work, we wanted to try something close to home, affordable, and kid friendly. Usually dining with the kids means compromising. But at Kostas, we found that we could each get exactly what we wanted.
Kostas’ menu is about five chocked-full pages of traditional Greek dishes, diner-style favorites, breakfast and more. During our first Sunday dinnertime visit, I ordered the salmon special and my husband had the gyro dinner – both were superb, and huge with leftovers that we brought home. The kids opted for breakfast – their all around favorite meal. How often can your kids eat breakfast for dinner while you enjoy a beer with your meal? Kostas has outdoor seating perched above Hertel on two front porches. We ate inside because the Sabres were playing and we had to be within view of the TV. Because it was a Sabres night, Kostas wasn’t as crowded as usual. They were doing a big take-out business to accomodate folks who wanted some good food with the game. Inside there are plenty of tables and booths. Many of the walls have Greek island inspired hand-painted murals which add to the relaxing charm of the Kostas experience.
On our second Saturday lunchtime visit, the kids ordered breakfast again (pancakes, waffles, eggs, homefries); I had the spinach and feta omelette; my husband and mom had the open beef souvlaki and my dad had the chicken sandwich served with spinach, mushrooms, onions and cheese. We were all members of the “clean plate club” — everything was plate-licking delicious.
When I inquired about their hours, the lovely hostess replied “We’re basically open all the time.” 7 days a week, from early in the morning til late at night, with breakfast served all day.
Previously, our kids’ repertoire of favorite eateries was limited to Ted’s and the “Dimer” (Lake Effect Diner.) But now when we ask them “Where do you want to go for [breakfast, lunch, dinner]?” they are quick to reply “Hostas”. I guess we have been spending too much time working on the garden…
